Falling for Niagara, Canada

Photographer Travis Burke syncs up with professional kayaker Nick Troutman for an insider’s perspective of the Niagara Falls region. As a thrill-seeking adventurous Canadian, Troutman leaves no hazard unrisked as he treats Travis to the coolest experiences in the area.

Most people think of Niagara Falls when they think of Niagara, Canada, but there is so much more adventure to be had. Burke and Troutman begin by jumping off a bridge, as you do, and rocketing jet skis across Lake Erie's endless sapphire expanse. But it doesn’t end there, either.

A visit to Niagara wouldn’t be complete without a stop at The Falls, but these two are far from passive bystanders, and they continue their watery adventure into the Niagara Gorge—where waves and rapids of the raging river completely submerge their Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour.

Endlessly exploring, they pick their way through shipwrecks on tiny kayaks, nature preserves, and pristine waterfalls—making sure to stop for fat blackberries along the way. Burke remarks, “This is exactly what I thought we’d be doing on this trip—picking berries next to a beautiful waterfall.” That’s Niagara; home to natural wonders, hidden and exposed.
