THANKS to data from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics, Max Galka, the man behind Metrocosm, created an interactive map of US immigration since 1820.

Watch the video to visualize the 79 million people who left their native land and moved to the US and later obtained lawful permanent resident status in this country. Note the immigration waves coming from particular countries such as Ireland from the 1820s to 1850s and Italy and Russia from 1880s to 1920s (1 dot on the map = 10,000 people).

As mentioned by Max Galka, this map does not include illegal immigration or people brought to the US as slaves (forced immigration).
