Maldives is like the Shahrukh Khan of the late 90s or the Vidya Balan of the present era. It is scooping up nearly all the big awards year after year. This year, the notable trophy of the ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’ fell on the lap of Maldives, yet again! Coming from the reputed World Travel Awards, this is no mean feat and is bound to escalate demands for honeymoon package for Maldives. Not that the tropical South-East Asian island was in any dire need of such a trophy to boost its tourism. It is going through a purple patch you see, pulling in tourists in increasing numbers each month.
Okay, we understand that Maldives has got some of the best beaches and resorts in the world and that ‘Ithaa underwater restaurant’ has been sitting tight on our bucket list for a really long time. But still, one cannot help but drop jaws in shock when one learns that it clocked million-plus visitors last month. One million tourists in a single month? That is a stat which will give a run for hits even to Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ video.
But one look at the Maldives tour guide and you may feel helpless to accept defeat and acknowledge its greatness. While its sandy white beaches are surely a winner, it is the water villas, sporting resorts and a flurry of exotic restaurants which has put this island on the top of every traveler’s wish list. Just to speak a bit more about the 2013’s World Travel Awards, our claims are backed on the fact that Hulhule Island Hotel ran away with the World’s Leading Airport Resort 2013 and the famed Conrad Maldives Rangali Island grabbed the trophy for the World’s Leading Water Villa Resort 2013.
Ironically, the unsettled political situation in this part of the world was not doing its tourism industry any good till a couple of years back, but now the demand for tour package for Maldiveshas been making every other island destination cry hoarse. And when we tell you that Maldives’ competitors this year for the trophy were some established giants like Mauritius, Sicily, Crete, Barbados and Jamaica, you shall know that this Asian island must be good, really good.
Tch tch, we forgot to make a mention of Baros Maldives, another resort which brought glory to Maldives by edging past other rom-com villas to snatch the World’s Most Romantic Resort 2013. So, the next time you plan a honeymoon or a second honeymoon, you know which resort to stay in.
For the time being, we will take your leave, leaving you grappling with the virtual pages of Maldives tourism guide and with the hope that you would pay this island the visit it deserves. Chow!
