Grew up in Palo Alto, so I basically know the whole area. I call Berkeley my home when I go back there but I've been to every nook and cranny.

New Haven, United States

Went to uni here! Not much to see except Yale, but there's definitely plenty of fun to be had around there.

Beijing, China

Too much - lived there for years. Will be saying goodbye soon but can offer all kinds of advice.

Hi everyone, I'm Michael from California, been on a lifelong travel binge that seems to only be getting harder to stop! Growing up in a relatively staid suburb has inspired me to explore the corners of the world that, during my childhood, were always confined to National Geographic articles. At university I studied anthropology, which gave me the tools to conquer the fear of the unknown that besets many of us. I've always been a writer and always been interested in stories - how people face challenges, how they mark different stages of their lives, in different cultural contexts and far outside their comfort zones. For that reason, I'm always drawn to fresh experiences, new adventures, and stimulation that shakes up the mundane routines of everyday life.

My nearly four-year residence in Beijing is definitely part and parcel of that journey - I moved here after graduation and save for about a year back in the States have been here ever since, mostly working as a writer and journalist. Living here has presented both opportunities and difficulties that I never anticipated, and though I've loved (almost) every minute of it, it's about time to get started on a new adventure!

That's where MatadorNetwork comes in - I'm planning on spending about two and a half months backpacking around South East Asia, starting in March. I've never been so unmoored before and I would love to see what the local and traveler community is like in places like Laos, Burma, Sri Lanka and other countries in the region.
