"Streets of Afghanistan" Cultural Exhibition Returns to Kabul

by Michelle Schusterman Aug 9, 2012
Matador Ambassador Shannon Galpin’s latest project challenges existing perceptions of Afghanistan by highlighting the beauty and soul of the war-torn country.

THE PROJECT, entitled “Streets of Afghanistan,” is a collaborative effort between both Afghan and Western photographers. The exhibit of life-size photographs, video projection, music, and street art depicting parts of Afghanistan most people never see will arrive in Kabul this October.

“There is something powerful and humanizing about a portrait so big that you have no choice but to look the subject in the eye, or a landscape that feels like you are standing in the middle of the rolling green hills of northern Afghanistan.”

This exhibit allows the current narrative of Afghanistan to drop away and instead brings the color, beauty, and heartbreak to the front through the lens of the global community of photographers.” ~ Shannon Galpin

Below are a few photos of the exhibition.

A Kickstarter campaign is underway to help cover the costs of production, transportation, and security for the Kabul exhibition. The event will serve as the “cultural backbone” for Galpin’s non-profit organization Mountain2Mountain’s outreach and fundraising programs in Afghanistan.
