Kelly Slater is many things to many people: sex symbol, inspiring athlete, some dude on the news. But to a mother and her son, he’s a guardian angel.

Pro Surfer Kelly Slater Rescues Woman and Child From Massive Wave in Hawaii

Photographer Chris White told the story as such. As his wife and their son, strapped into his stroller, were crossing the road, a heavy wave reared up and knocked them clear across the road. The baby’s stroller was knocked over into the beach, where the child began to choke on salt water and sand.
Luckily, thanks to the “Surf Gods,” to hear White tell it, Slater just happened to be present and was able to get the pram righted fast enough. White’s wife managed to get up with nothing more than scrapes and bruises.
Luckily, everybody’s okay. And White is able to laugh off the potentially scary situation: “Van’s first wave was a huge one! Definitely a WA baby!”
