Forty-eight national teams will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that will stretch across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The list on FIFA’s official roll call reads like a compressed atlas: champions, contenders, and ambitious outsiders.

As of writing, 42 of the 48 teams have been decided:

  • Co-hosts: Canada, Mexico, USA
  • AFC: Australia, IR Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea Republic, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan
  • CAF: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia
  • Concacaf: Curaçao, Haiti, Panama
  • CONMEBOL: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay
  • OFC: New Zealand
  • UEFA: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland

You can find the full list and how many teams from each FIFA confederation on the official FIFA site.

The representative countries are grouped by confederation and separated by time zones, languages, and styles of play. Some arrive with deep tournament pedigree, others with momentum from recent qualifying campaigns. The co-hosts bring their own layers to the story: three countries sharing the spotlight, dozens of cities and stadiums preparing to discover which flags they’ll stage for the world, which will be announced on December 5.

The next chapter is about placement. Supporters don’t yet know where their favorite teams will land — which city will host which anthem, which group will ignite local rivalries, which venue will become an improbable home away from home. People are already making their travel plans to the 16 host cities, but that will only get more competitive once it’s decided where each team will play in the opening group stage.
