national parks to visit in 2026

Northeast Greenland National Park is unlike any other national park. It’s the largest national park in the world, covering an area over 375,000 square miles — more than 100 times the size of Yellowstone National Park. Also, because it’s one of the most remote parts of our planet, there’s no infrastructure anywhere. There are no hotels, visitor centers, restaurants, or roads. You can camp, but only in select areas.

Anyone wanting to visit Northeast Greenland National Park needs to obtain a permit from the Greenland government first. That makes visiting the park on your own complicated — not impossible, but difficult. The Greenland government recommends that travelers contact Nanu Travel, a local tour operator in Ittoqqortoormiit, the closest small settlement to the park. Their experienced guides can help you safely visit the park and organize the permits and logistical details for you.

For those who want to see the park with a little less planning, there are many expedition-style cruises that will take you there. Because the August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse passes directly over the park, there will be even more cruise options to take you there next summer. Leaders in polar sailings such as Hurtigruten Expeditions, Lindblad/Nat Geo Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions, and Albatros Expeditions, to name just a few,  can make sure you see the park in all its glory. Scoresbysund, the largest fjord in the world, is one of the highlights of any Northeast Greenland National Park cruise, but Zodiac outings, tundra walks, visits to nearby Inuit settlements, and non-stop wildlife watching are on the agenda, too.

Very few travelers ever make it to Northeast Greenland National Park. The only permanent settlements in the park are military and meteorological stations manned throughout the year by around 40 people total. While accessibility is complicated and cruise options are pricey, if you are determined enough (or have deep enough pockets), go in 2026. With more cruises organizing voyages to the biggest island in the world, and more flight options that make it easier than ever to reach, it’s only a matter of time before Greenland becomes the new Iceland, and polar bears become the new Mickey Mouse.

How to reach Northeast Greenland National Park

Northeast Greenland National Park is incredibly hard to reach. There are no roads, no ports, and no major airports. Your best bet to visit the park is to either hire a local tour operator or to take an Arctic expedition cruise. If you do want to do it on your own, you’ll need to get yourself to the airport in Nerlerit Inaat (Constable Point), about 50 miles from the park entrance. But remember, you’ll need to have various permits and arrangements set in advance, which the park recommends you arrange via Nanu Travel.
