FIFA World Cup 2026 Travel Guide

This year, Houston will host seven matches of the FIFA World Cup, including two in the knockout stages. That means soccer fans from around the world will be descending on this Texas giant. And if you’re one of them, sorting out where to stay should be near the top of your to-do list.

NRG Stadium is in the south of Houston, around 20 minutes from downtown by car or public transportation. This area is home to the Texas Medical Center, so although it’s well-connected, it’s not exactly picturesque, and most of the walkable hotels nearby are your standard chain motels. That said, the Red Line light rail connects central Houston to the Stadium Park/Astrodome Station, so realistically, you can stay anywhere in downtown or Midtown and ride in for fixtures in about 30 minutes. Of course, if the matches are your top priority, there’s nothing wrong with the nearby chain hotels, either. Many host cities are also offering shuttle service during the World Cup, as are some hotels, so it’s worth checking with the property you’re considering before booking your stay.

These are the best places to stay for visitors attending the World Cup in Houston, from budget-friendly stays to high-end escapes.

We hope you love the hotels near NRG Stadium we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

  • Location: 14444 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX
  • Distance from stadium: 14 miles
  • Starting summer rate: From $339 per night

Best Western Plus Sugar Land isn’t walking distance to the stadium. In fact, it’s about a 20 to 25 minute drive to the stadium. But the appeal is twofold: Sugar Land sits to the west of downtown Houston, meaning you’ll probably be going in the opposite direction of most traffic coming from Houston to get to NRG Stadium. Second, the fact that it’s in Sugar Land makes it cheaper. If hotels near the stadium are five or 10 times as expensive as normal on match days, those in Sugar Land — which include the usual motels, plus some nicer-end chain options — are only a fraction of the cost.

The Best Western Plus specifically is straightforward but comfortable, with bright rooms, free parking, a pool, and complimentary breakfast. It’s a tried-and-true option for people who want to save some money and don’t feel like dealing with the crowds and traffic of Houston proper. Using the code VISITSUGAR will save you 15 percent on the going rate

It’s under a 15-minute drive to NRG Stadium, and while you won’t be walking to the match, you will be surrounded by restaurants, designer shopping, and more Bentleys than you’ll see anywhere else in the city (there’s also a dealership in the building). Wyndham Houston near NRG Park

Photo: Expedia

  • Location: 8686 Kirby Dr, Houston
  • Distance from stadium: .6 miles
  • Starting summer rate: From $112 per night

In all honesty, the Wyndham Houston near NRG Park is probably not going to show up on lists of the best hotels in Houston, especially for people looking to hang around the property. But if walking to the stadium is the top priority, well, fast walkers can get there in about 10 minutes. Rates also tend to stay lower than those at nearby chains. While the dated interiors won’t win design awards, there are nearly 400 rooms, free parking (with some caveats), an on-site bar called Cattleman’s Club, and a gift shop, which stocks snacks if you get back late and find yourself with the munchies.
