2026 World Cup Guide: Monterrey
Return to Matador Network’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Travel Guide.
Monterrey’s combination of world-class infrastructure, passionate soccer culture, and exceptional accessibility via a major international airport make it an ideal World Cup host city. The city’s Estadio BBVA, nicknamed “The Steel Giant,” is a modern, visually impressive stadium with a capacity of over 53,000, offering state-of-the-art facilities and a breathtaking backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountains. Monterrey’s strategic location in northern Mexico, proximity to the US border, and robust airport connections — with direct flights to major cities in North America and Europe — make it a convenient and attractive gateway for fans traveling from around the world. Getting to Estadio BBVA from central Monterrey is straightforward thanks to a variety of transportation options. By public transit, you can take the Metrorrey Line 1 (L01) to Estación Lerdo de Tejada, which is about a nine-minute walk from the stadium. Alternatively, several bus lines — including routes 214, 223, TME, and 093 — stop near the stadium, with the closest bus stop being Pablo Livas (Estadio B.B.V.A.), just a four-minute walk away. The first Metrorrey arrives around 5:01 AM, and the last around 12:15 AM, while buses run even later, with the last 223 bus stopping nearby at 1:27 AM. For rideshare, Uber is widely available in Monterrey, with drop off not far from the gates (though surge pricing and general business are to be expected).
If you prefer to drive, parking is available adjacent to the stadium for those without an annual parking pass, though specific options may be limited during large events, so arriving early is recommended.

This expansive public space will host the official FIFA Fan Festival for 39 days throughout the tournament, aiming to bring together over two million fans for live screenings, entertainment, food, and cultural activities. Fundidora Park is well-known for its large open areas, walking paths, and proximity to the city center, making it an ideal and vibrant hub for fans before and after matches at Estadio BBVA. There may be additional smaller fan zones or public viewing areas announced closer to the even (see here for more info), but Fundidora Park is confirmed as the primary location for official fan activities in Monterrey.
