Ross- Great article. I've been to Condesa DF's rooftop bar and it's amazing. Great views of Mexico City at night. This is a great place for couples. There's also a nice bar/restaurant inside the hotel that has a retractable ceiling– pretty nice, too. Great drinks. Good food. Great atmosphere.

  • Ben

I went to one once in Rome in 2005, couldn't say where it was now but it was on top of a gallery and pretty central. I think it was a cafe though, so I'm probably not being that relevant!

    Great post!

  • Eduardo

Theres one in Sao Paulo, Brazil called SKY.
Is on the roof of a charmous hotel, and is much prettier then most of these listed bars! During the day or nights, is always worth a visit.

Great page! Another one that comes to mind is the roof gardens in high street ken in London : )

My cousin helped design the menu at 230 5th, a rooftop bar in Manhattan. Pretty cool place, good looking crowd and a great view of the Empire State building. Here's a write-up in the Times.

Nice list, although you left one out called Panorama. It's in toronto and has gorgeous panoramic views, especially of the downtown skyline. Not to mention it's 53 stories up…

  • Juan Carlos Bonilla

Amazing places and two of the best are Condesa D.F. because of their environment and Moon in Las Vegas, the last one has an incredible view.

Nice! I'd love to check some of these out sometime.

I have to say, though, my favorite rooftop bars in the world didn't make the cut. The entire Taksim district of Istanbul is _full_ of rooftop bars…it's kind of the thing there. With the lights of downtown Istanbul stretching to the Bosporus, the stars overhead on warm nights, the amazing local bands, and best of all cheap beer it's tough to think of a rooftop I'd rather spend a late night/early morning on.

  • Stefan

They all sound great, just one thing about vertigo, make sure you reserve a place or book in time, otherwise you get stuck in the part of the bar right above the kitchen extract and air-con plant.

    Hi Ross,

the photo that you put for the Vertigo Lounge is not actually Vertigo but it is a photo of Sirocco.

Sirocco is on 64th floor of The Dome State Tower. While Vertigo is on the 61th floor of Banyan Tree Hotel, as mentioned in your note.

Here is Sirocco >> http://www.thedomebkk.com/web/corp_home03.html Here is Vertigo >> http://www.at-bangkok.com/detail_page.php?sub_id=
And here is Sirocco VS Vertigo >> http://www.bangkok.com/rooftop-bars/index.html
They look similar but if you can see, Sirocco bar counter bar is in a circle shape, while for Vertigo, the bar counter is in square shape.

You may try to update your photo there, or might as well just keep the photo but change the bar name to the correct one.

Latitudes in Orlando, FL is great. Small and kind of intimate but always a great crowd, its nice to be among the larger buildings at night down on church street.

I went to a FANTASTIC rooftop bar/ restaurant in Athens, Greece. It was called Pil Poul or something along those lines. It was very classy and had a beautiful view of the Acropolis at night, when it's all lit up. I was lucky and was there on a night when they have a light show at the Acropolis, which was wonderful to watch. There was also a spectacular view of the sunset, not to mention the lights of Athens. The food was delicious, and it was probably the best restaurant experience I've ever had.

THESE ARE GREAT SPOTS, BUT I MUST CONFESS THIS SITE MADE ME A BIT SAD. I HAVE THE FONDEST MEMORIES OF THE BAR AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWER IN NEW YORK. OFTEN THERE ON BUSINESS, I BEGAN EVERY EVENING WITH A PRE-DINNER MANHATAN OVER MANHATAN. SIGH.

Eduardo: Is Skye on top of Unique Hotel in SP?

Jim: I'll have to check out Georges next time I'm in Paris.

Kathy: If it's good enough for James, I guess it should have made the list..

Ben, Julie: thanks for the comments. Julie, thanks for the tip on Condesa DF. I'll be sure to hit it up when I get to Mexico City–that entire hotel looks amazing :)

  • Ross Borden

gintOnic — Thank you for correcting me! You are absolutely right. I have been to Vertigo and I didn't even notice the bars were a different shape. That one is probably my favorite on the list so I will definitely have to check out Sirocco Next time I'm in BKK.

San Diego – Rooftop of the "W". It is a real beach, with sand and fire pits but all very classy. You very quickly forget you are way above the ground. All the walls are large glass pannels so you can see the beauty of downtown SD. :) Go check it out!

Here I thought I wouldn't recognize any of these bars… But I've been to the Captain and while it's small, it is a great place to be at night to see Shanghai light up. And the drunken tomfoolery that went on after nine pm…!

Ross, you were lucky than me. At least you have been to Vertigo. Well, you see, I live in Thailand but I haven't got any chances to go to any of the bars yet! But I have always been wanting to go to Sirroco though, and I will soon!

I was in Shanghai 2 times last months, and also went to the Bund but didn't get to read your page at the time so I didn't know about the Captain bar. But I'm going there again in a few months, I will try to check the Captain bar out then.

<b>THC Rooftop Bar</b> – Chiang Mai / Thailand – couldn't stand next to the bars on the list as it's far from posh, still it's extremely fascinating. You can meet there every night a jolly mess of backpackers from all over the world, having a stop over in the north of Thailand.

Yes, the rooftop bar in Chiang Mai is far from posh, but the friendships I made in there are some of the strongest ever….sitting down in there changed my travel plans and my life!

Its above a vegetarian restaurant near the moat just outside the gates to the old city, anyone will know how to find it.

One of the coolest rooftop bars i ever went to was at an indian "pay what you can" restaurant in Tel Aviv, Israel. I can never remember the name but anyone there would know it just from this description. The rooftop had couches, hammocks, tapestries and a big movie screen. Totally a bohemian bar heaven.

Jesus give the guy a break it’s a big world. He has to leave some out on a list of 10 when it includes the entire WORLD!

I have an idea, how about you make a top 10 list of anything and instead of having it include the entire world just make it one state. As a matter of fact I will even let you use Rhode Island as your state. Then I will beat the shit out of your selections, whatever they are, and make you feel like a prick for even attempting to make the list in the first place.

There is a club on the top of a skyscraper in Montreal. I think it's called Altitude 737, I've been there a bunch of times, is crazy.

  • Joaquin

    Hudson Sky Terrace – "nice" view … ! :D

  • Dominic

I'm surprised 737 in Montreal wasn't mentioned. The view rivals any one of the bars in this list.

    • http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/Blogs/Nightlife Brendan Murphy

737 does have a pretty incredible view.

For my Montreal Nightlife blog, I recently wrote a post about Montreal’s best patios.

It’s not exactly the same thing, but drinking outside is drinking outside! (and Hudson’s rooftop bar is pretty incredible.)

Gravity Bar aka Guinness Factory is an great place for a pint straight from the hops. It's unfortunatly not a real bar though since you can't just go there to drink all night. It's a tourist attraction more than anything, but well worth it!

  • RedSaber

Yes, there should have been Altitude 737 in Montreal. It's a crazy place. It's on the top of one of the tallest building in Montreal "Place Ville-Marie". It's on 2 floors, and there's 2 (or is it 3?) outside balconys to see downtown Montreal, the Mount Royal next to it, the St-Lawrence River and the best thing: all the fireworks from the Loto-Québec International Fireworks festival of Montréal. That's just crazy! It's classy, loungy and during the day it's a busy businessmen restaurant. There's also the top of the "W" in San Diego that I heard was completely crazy!

The Sundial Lounge at the top of the Westin Peachtree Hotel, it rotates constantly making 1 revolution per hour so you can see Atlanta's skyline without leaving your table. The waitress said that after working a shift it took a few minutes to reorient yourself to walking on a non-moving floor.

  • Thick Frank

Was at Sirocco this past February and I agree, utterly amazing and deserves the #1 ranking. The restaurant is Italian and is surprisingly good. What is uniques about Sirocco is there is no roof, no shelter, nothing except you and the sultry Thai air and virtual lack of any safety features like railings. There are railing but in the US there would be a 10' high railing courtesy of your friendly lawyers.

  • Daniel

The Peabody, classy hotel in Memphis, hosts rooftop parties downtown. Shoulda made the list!

  • Matthew

I was in Singapore recently and went to a rooftop bar called "Loof". I wasn't as high as some of the others but had a great view down north bridge road and had great food and atmosphere.

No Felix in Hong Kong? you have to be smoking crack not to include it in this list… a bathroom where you pee on glass overlooking the city, and the iconic view of the HK skyline? list is far from complete in my opinion.

The Sirocco looks sick and prolly the best i've ever seen. Most of these cool clubs are on hotels. You can find these hotels at http://www.RoadTripHelper.com RoadTripHelper.com is a web 2.0 meta hotel search engine that has more hotels than any other site. It searches over 30 sites to find you the best deal. It also has a easy map interface that plots all the hotels when searched by city, address, intersection, landmark, airport codes, or universities names. On the map is where you guys can find hotels in any particular entertainment district. btw the 737 in Montreal and Skybar in Toronto are alright as well.

  • gwyn

i'm glad someone mentioned THC in Chiang Mai! A fairly new place in Hong Kong is the garden platform, or something like that, on iFC 2 – not on the top but high enough for some spectacular views. The best part is, it's public property, so you can get an expensive drink from the bar next door called Red if you're feeling lazy; or you can bring your own bottle of wine and plastic cups to enjoy a lovely venue without spending the cash required for HK nghtlife! There's couches and tables and even trees, so it makes a great place to relax with friends

  • Sal

Vertigo on the rooftop of baanyan tree hotel in sathorn road, bangkok, is pretty cool too, just 4 floors less than sirocco but pretty amazing 360 degree view.

Yeah, in Sao Paulo, on top of the hotel Unique there is a very chic bar, with one of the most beautiful urban nightscapes I've seen. Just imagine a hotel right in the middle of Central Park in NY, with nothing around, and then the city surrounding it like an illuminated picket fence

  • kezi

check out Lebiderya or 360- truly wonderful!

  • http://writeronthewayhome.blogspot.com niamhg

I was happy to see Sirocco at the top of the list , that has to be my favourite rooftop bar ever ! Vertigo to me was more of a romantic quiet evening place , but Sirocco has great cocktails , scarily-low walls for that bit of excitement and the best view of Bangkok without going up in a plane. Great place !

  • karl

This list has no credibility without the “Top of the Mark” at the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco on it. The Standard is a nice place that deserves consideration. Also the bar at the top of the Marriott Renaissance across the street from Petco Park in San Diego is an awesome place to to take in the city and hopefully a baseball game.

Sky bar in Beirut should also get a mention. Tara Reid flies there a couple times a year to party- as far as obscure parties go think that’s one of them.

    Great article!

Your pictures have me longing to get away to one of these locations….I can already picture myself in that Australian bar with a big martini in hand.

    Cheers!

Hookah Bar on top of a building in Mexico City’s financial district Santa Fe is one of the best I know! Great food, live music and astonishing beautiful girls make it the perfect place.
There’s also Magnolia on top of the Torre Mayor in Reforma (Mexico City).

  • Gordo

It should be at the top of the liste, Burj Al Arab roof Bar in DUBAI, UAE.

Wonderful list. The Penthouse in Madrid is one of my favorite rooftop spots in the world. Check out my list of other hot rooftop spots in Madrid: http://abroad101.blogspot.com/2009/07/destination-spotlight-sunsets-in-madrid.html

What about the rooftop bar at the Rex Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City? We spent Chinese New Year there looking down on the amazing floral displays running down from the Presidential Palace to the river. It’s not the highest of bars but it was also the base for the press corps during the Vietnam War so has a great sense of history about it.

  • Christin

Love the site! So glad I stumbled upon it.

I would like to suggest La Casa de Las Sirenas as another great rooftop bar! A centuries old home located on República de Guatemala in México City’s famed Zocalo, It has been wonderfully restored without adding any item that is not original. The terraza offters a birds-eye view of the Templo Mayor acccompanied by the beating drums of Azteca’s dancing below. Lunch included a supple Mexican red wine, a filet cooked to perfection and top notch service. It is a must when splurging in one of the worlds grandest cities. !Buen Provecho!

Vertigo is not in the list. It is located on the 61st. floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok.

Another very classy rooftop bar to check out would be the Sky Bar, on the top of Hotel Unique in São Paulo, Brazil. The hotel itself is very contemporary and has a really cool design- it looks like a boat (or a watermelon depending on who you are talking to)` and the rooftop bar serves killer martinis with some unusual flavors – my drink of choice is the cucumber martini. By the pool outside beautiful views can be had of the city of São Paulo and the multicolored ‘Eiffel tower’-like radio towers that line Paulista Avenue.

Great to see Condesa DF on the list. I spent many of nights there when I lived in the city and can vouch for its scene. One night I was even interviewed on the roof top bar for a TV show (Discovery Latin America). The show was about the top ten hottest places / best scenes in Latin America.

Mexico City is clearly one of those places, and Condesa DF is one of the best in the city.

    stay adventurous,

Hi, there is another roof top bar in Kuala Lumpur which has the excellent view of the Petronas Twin Towers (was the tallest building in the world). It is at the 33rd Floor of Traders Hotel (part of Shangri-la hotel chain) … It has the amazing seats by the window, romantic but definitely need to be careful after few drinks cause it is just too near to the swimming pool!!
After few visits I still find it my favourite bar in Kuala Lumpur.. My hubby (then boyfriend!) and I even flew all the way from Australia to celebrate his 30th at Skybar! Google up the photos really amazing view and cosy place :)

    Regards,
    E

Skybar beirut by far is one of the best bars in the world.

White in beirut should probably be on the list as well.

    Hey Ross,

You missed one: the bar in Bolivia at the Adventure Brew Hostel and Brew. It looks out at Illimani which is somehow lit up past sunset. Tons of travelers, good beer, and a great view. If you ever make it down there to Bolivia…

  • shag

I’m with Leila and Costa…Skybar Beirut is epic. It needs to be on the list!

I help run promotions and marketing for the four clubs at the Palms Hotel in Vegas, including Moon, which is one of my favourite places in the city. Everyone there is wonderful.

    • http://www.winchsolutions.co.uk Steve Melling

      Hi Daniela,

Moon sounds special, especially if “Everyone there is wonderful” we arrive in Vegas for the first time on wed 4th Nov from the UK, Would like to visit Moon at the weekend, whats the door policy & age range of the customers? Is it tough to get in? whens the best time to go?

      Would appreciate your advice

Paramount @ the top of Centrepoint, Tottenham Court Rd, W1, London.

Its a private members club 33 floors up. Not a roof top but amzing views of london. Every month there are Superfreq parties there. Superfreq being an amazing london based house and techno party run by Mr C of then End club and the Shamen band.

Definitely Sirocco on the 64th floor of the State Bldg in Silom, Bangkok (#1 on this list) is the most sophisticated rooftop bar I have ever been to – absolutely stunning and dripping with classy chic. Drinks are extremely expensive, as is the food. Plus you can’t sit at the Moon bar. Have your first drink there, then a short taxi ride to Vertigo on 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel where the vibe is more casual than opulent but views are equally as good, the drinks a little cheaper, and there are tables and couches surrounding the bar. One of the things that sets the Bangkok bars apart from others in the world is that they are extremely high and absolute rooftop – no winidows, only low glass walls and rails. A Bangkok must do!

  • Tyson

I’m surprised that there’s not a Chicago bar on the list considering it is one of the best skylines in the world. The Roof at the Wit Hotel is a beautiful new space and although it’s not an open rooftop bar the Signature Room in the John Hancock provides spectacular, surreal views at 96 floors up.

  • Hana Marley

    Re Bangkok —

Sirocco (restaurant section) and the attached Sky Bar are on the rooftop of the State Tower / Lebua Hotel. It’s the Sky Bar here that you CAN’T sit at.

Vertigo (restaurant section) and the attached Moon Bar are on the rooftop of the Banyan Tree Hotel. You CAN sit at the Moon Bar here.

Two more fabulous places (not on the roof but very high up with incredible, sweeping city views) —

City Space, Moscow (at the Swissotel)
Aqua Spirit, Hong Kong (One Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui)

  • Maribel

Hotel Doña Maria in Seville, Spain offers a beautiful view of the cathedral…especially at night!

There are lots of great bars in Istanbul, and a few great rooftop bars, but the absolute best are on the fringe of Sultanahmet, on the fringe of the old city. From there, you can take in the Bosphorus, the Blue Mosque and, my favorite, the Hagia Sophia. A cold beer is the perfect complement to the coolness of hearing the Call to Prayer while looking over the dome of that 6th century masterpiece. Check out the Hotel Yasmak Sultan’s rooftop bar, uphill about 100 feet from the outer walls.

A place that’s going to be making a lot of noise on these type of lists in the very near future is Muzique in Montreal. 2 rooms, one playing house with modern decor and one playing old school that looks like a victorian sitting room with a hollowed out grand piano dj booth and a rooftop patio overlooking the city

    What ?! Where’s SkyBar -Beirut- ?!!?
It was elected number one bar in the world !!

There is a copy of Bangkok bar Sirocco….Surabaya, Indonesia at the top (nearly) of the Java Paragon hotel. Excellent bar, sights, but not the atmosphere of Sirocco. Worth going to if you end up in Surabaya though.

My wife and i dined at sirocco about 12months ago and the views were amazing. Cocktails and service were the best we had in bangkok, however the food was absolutely appalling. The thai people as a whole should really just stick to thai food and forget their obsession with western culture and its food. The quality of  produce was impeccable a pity the same couldn’t be said of the execution of the dishes. Clunky and unrefined come to mind for a $300 dinner it’s fair to say i expected a little more…..

The Captain Bar in Shanghai is only 6th floor, but the view of the Bund is good for people on a budget (Captain’s also is a hostel), but if you want something really high up with a sprawling 360 view, I would of thought the Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor of the Grand Hyatt in PuDong would be better

hi, best view in shanghai for me is char bar at the indigo hotel, because located on the edge of the river and south, it allows you to witness the sunset on both sides of the river at the same time, it’s also the highest and only building of the place so panoramic view is just awesome, FYI: I don;t work there but I really believe this is the best even better than the vue bar at hyatt, check this out :http://www.flickr.com/photos/77271936@N04/7698961336/in/set-72157629443169831.
