I’ve climbed my entire life in BC, Idaho, and Utah. And while those states do have some of the best climbing towns in North America, they’re not a full list. Though types of rock, conditions, and availability of bolted climbing routes and organizations varies from country to country, climbers know that some places are better than others when it comes to sending it. The 17 places below are known as some of the best climbing towns on the planet, whether you’re planning a vacation or looking for something a little more permanent.
The best climbing towns usually have an extensive array of bolted climbing routes nearby, climbing organizations and clubs that maintain routes and support new climbers, and plenty of climbing guides and (if you’re lucky) gyms to help you further your skills.
Keep in mind that climbing isn’t something you can go and do on your own with no training. Head to a local climbing gym and get practice in belaying and possibly lead climbing before you think about seriously climbing outside at any of these destinations.
