At This Dominican Republic Club Med, Every Guest Gets The Resort They Want. Mine Included Treetop Yoga.

Dominican Republic Epic Stays
by Jennifer Weintraub Jun 18, 2026

I took a sip of a fresh green juice from the swim-up Zen pool bar after a morning yoga class, listening to the palms rustle in the warm wind, and I wondered: how did I end up somewhere this quiet at an all-inclusive resort?

Set on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic in one of the Dominican Republic’s most preserved regions, Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda feels worlds away from the Caribbean’s oversized resorts. As Club Med’s first Exclusive Collection resort in the Americas, this luxury retreat leans into wellness, sustainability, and local culture, all while being surrounded by mostly preserved beaches and jungle.

Walking through the open-air, eco-chic lobby beneath a soaring palapa roof, I was handed a welcome drink and sank into a bright oversized wicker chair. Then Alejandro, Guest Services Manager, set up everything I needed for a seamless stay: a WhatsApp thread for requests, the Club Med app with the resort’s endless daily activities, and a wristband that doubled as my room key and resort access.

That combination of thoughtful service, elevated amenities, and wellness programming defines Club Med Michès. It’s a place for travelers who want the convenience of an all-inclusive without the scale, the noise, or the sense that 3,000 other guests are having the exact same trip.

One resort, four villages: Accommodations at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

The 93-acre beachfront property is divided into four distinct villages: the family-friendly Explorer Cove, central Caribbean Paradise, and the adults-only Archipelago and Emerald Jungle.

I stayed in Emerald Jungle, which is designed around well-being whereas Archipelago is oriented more toward couples, complete with private plunge pools. Set deliberately apart from the family-friendly activity zones, it felt more like a boutique retreat hidden within the larger resort. The Zen pool, spa, and daily wellness programming were all just steps away.

My smart room, outfitted with automatic AC presence regulation, carried the same calming energy as the surroundings, blending shades of deep green with wood tones and modern lines, all inspired by the dense jungle landscape. Across from the bed, a cozy seating area became my unofficial espresso corner each morning before I wandered onto the private deck. Angled away from neighboring balconies, it felt surprisingly secluded.

The bathroom leaned into the same sense of calm. Outfitted with glossy teal tile, high-end bath products, and an oversized rain shower, it made rinsing off salt, sand, and sunscreen feel like a spa ritual in itself.

From wellness to water sports: Things to do at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

The hardest part about staying at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda isn’t finding something to do; it’s accepting that you can’t do it all. The resort organizes more than 25 activities, from various yoga and fitness classes to archery, kayaking, and flying trapeze.

Your experience here is what you make of it, but if Michès has a defining personality, it’s wellness, so I leaned hard into it. As a busy mom of two little boys who would have absolutely loved this resort, I had to remind myself that it’s okay to indulge in myself. So I did.

Mornings began in the open-air Treetop Wellness Canopy, a two-story wooden structure standing among the palms where yoga classes overlooked the jungle. Visiting instructor Liat Philipson managed to strike that rare balance of making the class approachable for beginners (including my husband’s first-ever yoga session) while still challenging experienced yogis like myself.

That same welcoming energy carried across the resort. Whether I was learning to windfoil, improving my tennis game, or trying aerial yoga, each sport was led by a patient, highly skilled instructor, many of them locals, alongside an international team of specialists.

In between, I kept returning to the adults-only Zen pool, a naturally filtered pool ringed by fountains, a koi pond, and enough tree cover that you can’t see the beach from it. A swim-up bar served fresh detox juices, smoothies, and Dominican-inspired cocktails made from local fruit.

But I couldn’t resist the beach. Club Med Michès sits on a peninsula where the shoreline is long and palm-lined, the water is warm and turquoise, and the lounge chairs and hammocks are rarely crowded. Eventually I’d end up there with a book, listening to the water.

For peak relaxation, the Cinq Mondes Spa delivered. After a personalized massage using the French spa brand’s natural, luxury products, I drifted between the hot and cold plunge pools, sipping on chamomile tea post-treatment. Then, there was the outdoor hydrotherapy shower circuit with multiple water features for one final round of zen.

The resort is beautiful, but the protected wilderness just beyond it is worth the effort to reach. A sunset kayak tour along the coastline revealed what lies past the property’s edge: dense jungle laced with vines and palms giving way to long stretches of shore. Eventually, we pulled onto a beach where guides unpacked juices on a secluded stretch of sand. By the time I paddled back to shore, the sun was dipping lower, and I watched the sky turn soft shades of orange and pink.

Local ingredients, global flavors: Dining at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

At Club Med Michès, food isn’t an afterthought; it’s part of the experience.

Mornings started the same way: post-yoga, an iced vanilla latte from the Coffee House in hand, I strolled barefoot along a long, quiet beach. The rest of the day unfolded at one of the three on-site restaurants.

Cayuco, the resort’s main buffet-style restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with 10 rotating stations, ranging from Dominican specialties to a raw bar and international cuisine. One station served tandoori chicken while another spun cacio e pepe in a giant Parmesan wheel. And then there was the dessert station stacked with sweets. The only logical strategy was to sample everything.

For lunch, I gravitated toward Coco Plum Beach Lounge, where Dominican-inspired barbecue was served steps from the sand and to the soundtrack of live music and waves gently lapping the shoreline. The buffet served fresh Mauritius roti, a warm flatbread with ties to the island’s rich cultural blend of Indian, African, and Creole influences, piled with curried chicken, rice, vegetables, chutney, and spice-rich sauces. Dinner was a quieter, Caribbean-focused affair. Farm-to-table specialties and locally sourced ingredients were highlighted in tropical tuna ceviche, whole grilled fish, and seafood pasta loaded with lobster, all enjoyed in an open-air beachfront setting.

One evening, I stopped for a rum tasting set up outside the main restaurant. There, I sampled several flavored rums, including Mamajuana, the Dominican Republic’s signature drink made by steeping herbs, tree bark, rum, red wine, and honey to create an earthy, spiced liquor.

On my final night, I splurged on Coal and Copper Steakhouse, the resort’s only restaurant not included in the all-inclusive rate. My four-course meal, which included flame-cooked steaks, classic sides like creamed spinach and velvety mashed potatoes, justified the extra cost.

The abundance of unlimited gourmet food and drinks feels borderline dangerous. Luckily, the resort’s focus on quality ingredients, including local fish and fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers and grown through agro-ecological practices on the island, left me feeling satisfied, not stuffed after every meal.

After dinner, I promptly ordered a cocktail from the La Perla Bar and pulled up a chair for nightly entertainment. Every night was a party (not that I could always keep up). It started with acrobatics and international performances and ended with dancing, all infused with Dominican flair and carrying the same vibrant energy as the island itself.
