A Government Decision Is Going to Make Flying to This Country a Lot Cheaper

There’s good news for those who want to visit the Dominican Republic: flights are about to get more frequent and a lot cheaper. This is all thanks to a recent pact between the United States and the Dominican Republic governments: an Open Skies agreement.

Simply put, an Open Skies agreement removes government interference when it comes to commercial air travel between two countries, including on the topics of routes, prices, capacity, and more. By fostering competition, Open Skies agreements push airlines to offer more practical, more frequent, and more affordable flights to travelers.

According to Gothamist, flights between countries that have signed an Open Skies agreement decrease by 32 percent on average. Flight fares dropping by one third of the price? Everyone wants that.

Currently, the US has 134 Open Skies agreement partners, including 28 European countries. The most recent additions include Mongolia and Ecuador with whom an Open Skies agreement was signed in 2023. The Dominican Republic will be the 135th partner.

And it’s not all about travelers saving big on flights. According to the US Department of State, “Open Skies agreements have vastly expanded international passenger and cargo flights to and from the United States, promoting increased travel and trade, enhancing productivity, and spurring high-quality job opportunities and economic growth.”

According to research by the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York, in 2020, there were over 2,2 million Dominicans living in the US. The Open Skies agreement will allow them to travel more easily and cheaply between their country of origin and the US, and will give travelers keen to explore this Caribbean destination the chance to do the same.
