When stuffed into its zippered inside pocket, Patagonia’s Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack 27L turns into a small rectangle that’s just 10.5 x 8 inches. With such a small size (it’s no bigger than three pairs of balled-up socks), it’s easy to just toss it into your bigger luggage or, if you lack the space, attach it to its outside. The key keeper that is located in the inside zippered pocket turns into a handy plastic carabiner that you can hook on the handle of your backpack or the zipper slider of your suitcase.

On the last international trip I took, both my carry-on and my personal items were bursting, so I attached my Patagonia tote bag to the outside zipper slider of my trusty Cotopaxi’s Allpa 28L Travel Pack. That way, it took no space whatsoever inside my luggage.

This tote bag is not called the “Black Hole Tote Pack” for no reason. There seems to be no end to how much it can contain and I’ve put its capacity to the test. During a recent trip to Iceland, my partner and I were gifted two incredibly bulky Arctic parkas, we won one polar bear stuffy during a trivia, and I bought a small pair of made-in-Iceland mittens, all of which we had not planned for and could not fit into our carry-ons or personal items.
