The problem with going on a trip with a very full carry-on and an equally crammed personal item is that there’s no room for any purchase you may make, or any gifts you may accept during your trip. That also means that if you want to go for a lengthy hike or a swim, you’ll need to totally empty one of them of your clothes, books, paperwork, computer, etc. to make it work. But if, like me, you like to travel without checking any luggage and don’t want to use your laptop backpack for sweaty clothes and damp towels, there’s an easy solution: Get yourself a packable tote bag. More specifically, get yourself Patagonia’s Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack 27L for just $99. It’ll come in handy just about every day when you’re traveling.

This Patagonia tote bag is much more than what you imagine a tote bag to be. It’s full of great features that make it the best tote bag you’ll ever own, and the only one you’ll ever need.

  • It’s seriously packable and light: This tote bag’s main asset is its ability to turn into a small 10.5 x 8-inch rectangle in less than one minute. It only weighs 13.05 ounces or 370 grams.
  • It provides way more space than you would expect: With a 27-liter capacity, when unfurled, this simple tote bag can contain as much as a carry-on (my carry-on has a 28-liter capacity). There are two compression buckles inside, a solid zipper, and a drawstring, all of which will help you make the most of every cubic inch available.
  • A tote bag with a zipper is the best kind of tote bag: You don’t want your stuff on show or exposed to the elements and this weather-resistant Patagonia tote bag will keep your belongings safe and dry.
  • It’s got lots of pockets: When unfurled, this packable tote bag has one zippered inside pocket with a key keeper, one front zippered pocket, and two large and elasticized mesh compartments for travel mugs or bottles.
  • You can carry it in multiple ways: There are two handles to carry the tote in your hand or on your shoulder, but there are also straps that allow you to use it as a backpack. However you decide to use it, all the straps and buckles can be tucked away neatly.
  • It’s stylish: Patagonia offers a good range of colors for this packable tote bag, combining practicality and style.

How packable is this Patagonia tote bag, really?

When stuffed into its zippered inside pocket, Patagonia’s Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack 27L turns into a small rectangle that’s just 10.5 x 8 inches. With such a small size (it’s no bigger than three pairs of balled-up socks), it’s easy to just toss it into your bigger luggage or, if you lack the space, attach it to its outside. The key keeper that is located in the inside zippered pocket turns into a handy plastic carabiner that you can hook on the handle of your backpack or the zipper slider of your suitcase.

On the last international trip I took, both my carry-on and my personal items were bursting, so I attached my Patagonia tote bag to the outside zipper slider of my trusty Cotopaxi’s Allpa 28L Travel Pack. That way, it took no space whatsoever inside my luggage.

How much can you stuff into this packable tote bag?

This tote bag is not called the “Black Hole Tote Pack” for no reason. There seems to be no end to how much it can contain and I’ve put its capacity to the test. During a recent trip to Iceland, my partner and I were gifted two incredibly bulky Arctic parkas, we won one polar bear stuffy during a trivia, and I bought a small pair of made-in-Iceland mittens, all of which we had not planned for and could not fit into our carry-ons or personal items. Luckily for us, I had brought this deceptively small packable tote bag with me, and we managed to fit all of the aforementioned items in it.
