Standing outside a 300-year-old thatched farmhouse in Japan’s Iya Valley, all I could hear were cicadas and the wind stirring through the trees. It was hard to believe I was only a short flight from Tokyo.
My first trips to Japan revolved around the country’s greatest hits: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. But on my sixth trip, I had a chance to break away from the cities and see what was beyond the Golden Route, a circuit that would eventually lead me to that farmhouse by way of a canal town, an art island, an udon school, and more.
After a short domestic flight from Tokyo to Okayama, I climbed into a car and watched the Japan I knew start to disappear. The buildings became smaller, the roads quieter, and the scenery increasingly green as we made our way toward the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding Setouchi region.
