Jennifer Lee, one of the 11 recipients of the Brave New Travelers Scholarship in 2009.

Two years ago, Matador launched the Brave New Travelers Scholarship Fund in partnership with Coro, a non-profit, youth leadership development program.

Students who receive scholarships are high school sophomores and juniors from low-income neighborhoods and under resourced public schools who have demonstrated tremendous resiliency and initiative in Coro’s 6-month experiential leadership program. The students receive training and resources to make a difference locally, becoming changemakers in their schools and neighborhoods.

As a non-profit, however, Coro lacks the resources to provide the students the opportunity to experience a world outside of their communities and gain global perspectives that are essential to effective leadership.

Last year, due in large part to generous donations from the Matador community, we raised over $10,000 US to send students on life-changing summer trips abroad. Upon their return, each student was required to write a travel reflection, as well as give at least one presentation at their high school or in their community in an effort to share what they experienced with others.

Each student expressed that the trip had literally changed the trajectory of his or her life. We’ve published their travel reflections on our travel website’s Youth Travel Scholarship page. Visit the page to meet the scholarship recipients and read about the impact travel had on these young people’s lives.

We are hoping to provide the same opportunities to students this summer and are reaching out once again for support from the Matador community and others to see if we can reach our goal of $10,000 by January 1st.

We accept contributions in any amount, and every donation brings us closer to our goal. Even if you can’t make a donation, though, you can go to the students’ travel reflections and leave a comment. Comments from writers and travelers like you mean so much to the students.

There are two easy ways to donate:

1. Go to our Youth Travel Scholarship Page to get more information about our fundraiser and when you’re ready, click the “Donate” button, which will take you to a secure PayPal interface.

2. Write a check to Global Glimpse and mail it to “The Youth Travel Scholarship Fund”, 605 Scott St. Apt. 1, San Francisco, CA 94117.

* All donations are tax-deductible because Global Glimpse is a 501 c3 non-profit.

Thank you for your support.
