We all know that fall colors abound in places like New England and Colorado – among many other states (I’m looking at you, Alaska). But the rest of the world explodes with color too — in some places you may not expect. Check out these spots all across the planet that are having fall colors right now.

Helsinki, Finland

I personally just pictured snow, but Finland looks like glowing embers.

Gilan, Iran

Yep, Iran. This region, which lies along the Caspian Sea, is a northern province and is mountainous, so it gets fall colors this time of year.

Dublin, Ireland

Some may think only of dreary rain, but this city lights up on a clear autumn day – such as this scene, at Trinity University.

Nagar, Pakistan

Nagar is a region of Pakistan famous for its lakes and mountains. I wonder why?

Bath, England

Another place an outsider might expect to just find rain and clouds is England and yet, just look. It’s perfect.

Tokyo, Japan

Sure – the red Japanese maples of Japan are famous. But this yellow wonderland at the University of Japan, not so much.

Ponte de Lima, Portugal

Locals know it as Avenida dos Platanos. It’s a walkway in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, which is in the far north of the country.

Southern Greenland

Autumn hits Greenland early, and quickly – just a few weeks in September – but it’s worth the effort to make it inside this short window.

Moscow, Russia

Most people stop over in Moscow to see the famous red square and St Basil’s cathedral. But just outside the city, you can find a whole other side to Moscow. This shot was taken in Izmaylovsky Park.

Gapyeong-gun Country, South Korea

This neighborhood is known as Petite-France. It’s a colorful little town year round – the buildings painted in pinks and purples and pastels – but in autumn? Oh yes.

Paris, France

If you need the real thing, Paris is the place. The iconic tower is a marvel any time of year, but the glow of fall really hammers home the nostalgia and romance.

The Great Wall of China, China

It kind of speaks for itself.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

One of the most visited national parks in all of Europe remains largely unknown abroad. Plitvice Lakes is found near the border of Croatia and Bosnia, with waterfall after cascading waterfall crashing down alongside wooden walkways. The fall season is short here too – winter hits fast – but if you catch it, you won’t ever forget it.
