Richard has reported from across the Middle East since 2009, covering Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. He began his career at Lebanon’s Daily Star — an English language daily newspaper in Beirut. During his time there, he held the roles of International Editor and Middle East Editor. He was also a reporter for the national pages, covering news and politics. In 2011, he moved back to the UK to work for The Independent newspaper in London. After a stint as a reporter on the news desk, he joined the foreign desk, where he later became Assistant Foreign Editor. He made several international reporting trips for the paper, covering stories such as the 2013 Taksim Square protests in Istanbul, fighting between the Lebanese army and jihadists in the city of Sidon, Turkey’s war against the PKK and the Syrian refugee crisis. In the summer of 2014 he moved to Paris to work with Agence France Presse. While there he worked as an editor on the news agency’s Europe and Africa Desk, before joining GlobalPost later that year. Richard has written extensively on the Syrian civil war, reporting from Aleppo in 2012 and covering the fallout from the conflict in surrounding countries. His reporting on the Kurdish issue has taken him across Turkey and up the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq numerous times. His current role involves overseeing GlobobalPost’s coverage of Africa and the Middle East, while reporting on the big stories across the region.
