25 places to go in 2026

No city in the world highlights the thrilling interplay of modern ambition and enduring tradition quite like Taiwan. The city is in a moment of renewal, investing heavily in urban projects that are changing its face while preserving cultural soul. A sweeping $7.46 billion urban-renewal program is underway in Taipei, with upgrades to Songjiang, Xinsheng, Jilin roadways, and other major thoroughfares throughout the city. The much-anticipated Danjiang (Tamkang) Bridge, designed by Zaha Hadid, is slated to open in early 2026, connecting Bali and Tamsui as both a transportation corridor and an architectural masterpiece.

The city’s convenience and connectivity takes another step forward in 2026 with the opening of the new Taipei Light Blue / Sanying MRT Line, linking Tucheng, Sanxia, and Yingge more directly to Taipei proper and cutting many commutes by about 20 minutes. A new metro station, Guangci / Fengtian Temple on the Xinyi line, is expected to open in 2026, becoming the new terminus for that line and providing easier access to one of Taipei’s most visited temple corridors. Taipei will also step up its signature events in 2026, including the iconic Taiwan Lantern Festival in March that will include more illuminated displays, performances, and community celebrations than ever.

Accessibility from the United States is increasing, too: In 2025, Dallas and Phoenix joined the list of cities with direct flights to Taipei.

Of course, part of the draw to Taipei is its trekking and tea hills. Largely reachable by train, trailheads surround the city, taking hikers into the mountains and teahouses that offer a completely different vibe than the bustling city center. In town, Restaurant A and Yu Kapo received two Michelin stars, bringing the city’s total two-starred restaurants to seven – though, the city also excels in street food.

If skyline views through nearly floor-to-ceiling windows are your priority, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei is the place to stay. High-end accommodations in a 43-story tower right in the Da’an District include a global dining buffet, Shang Palace Cantonese restaurant, and more restaurants spanning the globe from Japan to Italy. The 40th-floor spa is top-notch, as are the rooms – all of which have a stunning view. The property could not be more centrally located – the metro and the Linjiang Night Market are within walking distance.
