Alaska Airlines Is Discounting Flights to Hawaii Based on Wave Height

News Airports + Flying
by Eben Diskin Nov 4, 2019

Of all the airlines you might expect to give a surf-related discount, Alaska Airlines probably doesn’t top your list. Nevertheless, Alaska Airlines is launching a new sale on flights to Hawaii, with fares discounted up to 30 percent based on the height of forecasted waves around the Hawaiian islands. The deal applies to flights booked between November 4-8, and for all travel dates through November 20.

The “Swell Deals” sale will use data provided by surf forecasting site Surfline to monitor minute-to-minute wave conditions and generate greater discounts for higher waves. Here’s how the sale breaks down:

  • 0 to 10 foot swells: 10 percent off
  • 11 to 15 foot swells: 15 percent off
  • 16 to 20 foot swells: 20 percent off
  • 21 foot swells and above: 30 percent off

The discounts will be updated daily at noon and 5:00 PM PST, when the airline gets the new forecast from Surfline.

You can monitor the swells (and the discounts) by checking Alaska Airlines’ official “Swell Deals” page.
