As the name suggests, Fjord Norway is home to many of Norway’s most famous fjords. Many outdoor explorers have laced up their hiking boots to explore the northwest region, hopping from one fjord to another and pausing to marvel at the remarkable scenery, but this area of the country is also a fantastic place for a road trip centered around food.

Along the coastline and on the banks of fjords, you’ll find picturesque hamlets and some of the best seafood restaurants in Scandinavia. In the seaside towns of Kristiansund and the colorful Ålesund, the traditional dish of klippfisk (salted and dried cod) is celebrated and reinvented by chefs who champion local ingredients and each other. At the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord is the pretty waterfront village of Geiranger, where you could lose a day or two sampling award-winning chocolates and enjoying dishes such as cured trout with a crisp local brew while watching the boats come and go.

Venturing away from the water and toward the inland farmlands, you’ll find a bounty of growers and producers crafting world-famous cheese at Tingvollost and ciders at Tingvoll Sider. A journey through this culinary region is best enjoyed on a road trip, where you can dot from one place to another, eating and drinking and storing up on ingredients to either take back to your accommodation and enjoy with a backdrop of mountains and fjords or to take home with you to share Norwegian culture with loved ones.
