San Diego Pets Beaches and Islands

Return to the full list of the best dog-friendly places to go in 2026

San Diego is one of the most accommodating cities in the US for travelers with dogs. Within city limits, you’ll find two designated off-leash beaches, miles of shoreline around Mission Bay, and walkable neighborhoods like Ocean Beach, Coronado, and La Jolla that welcome pets without fuss. The city’s mix of beach access, green space, and easy outdoor dining makes it possible to plan a trip where your dog can join you almost everywhere.

The city’s two best-known dog beaches sit at opposite ends of the bay. Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is a local landmark — an always-open stretch of sand at the mouth of the San Diego River where dogs can run off-leash and splash in the surf. Across Mission Bay, Fiesta Island has sand dunes, shallow water, and unpaved paths through its center, where dogs are allowed off-leash in most areas. Both spots have rinse stations and posted maps outlining leash zones, so it’s easy to check rules before you go.

For a change of scenery, head across the bay to Coronado Dog Beach, where off-leash sand runs for nearly a mile along the island’s north end. The surf here is gentle enough for small dogs, and the views stretch toward Point Loma. Early mornings tend to be quiet, especially midweek, and street parking nearby makes it easy to stop in for a short walk. About 25 minutes north, Del Mar’s North Beach offers another stretch of sand for off-leash play outside the peak summer season.

One of the best things about San Diego is how seamlessly you can move between beach, park, and patio — often without getting back in the car. Away from the shoreline, neighborhoods like Little Italy, North Park, and South Park are great for leashed walks and outdoor dining, with dozens of cafés and breweries that welcome dogs on patios. Nearby Balboa Park has three fenced off-leash areas, including the five-acre Grape Street Dog Park, plus smaller grassy areas at Nate’s Point and Morley Field that stay open 24 hours a day.

If you’re looking to add something active to your stay, SUP Pups runs paddleboarding sessions on San Diego Bay that teach you how to balance and paddle with your dog aboard. In spring, the annual Pet Day on the Bay cruise invites leashed dogs aboard for a relaxed sail along the harbor. For more ideas, the tourism board maintains updated listings of pet-friendly beaches, parks, restaurants, and accommodations across the region.
