How to Do the 2026 World Cup Right in Kansas City

Kansas City will host six World Cup matches, including a quarterfinal, at its Arrowhead Stadium, dubbed Kansas City Stadium for the tournament, and has been selected as a base camp hub by four national teams — Algeria, Argentina, England, and the Netherlands. That concentration of teams, training bases, and matches (not to mention pubs and restaurants) means that fans who base themselves in the core are likely to share trains, buses, and coffee lines with supporters from across the world.

“Kansas City may be the smallest Host City for the FIFA World Cup 2026, but we are at the heart of this tournament — and at the center of the country,” a KC2026 spokesperson told Matador. “We’re also one of the only Host Cities to welcome four Team Base Camps, including three Pot 1 teams, Argentina, England, and the Netherlands, making Kansas City a hub for global soccer and diversity. We can’t wait to show the world why Kansas City is the Soccer Capital of America.”

For fans using public transit or chartered buses, the simplest advice is to base along the KC Streetcar line or near one of the ConnectKC26 park-and-ride hubs. Following a recent addition, the streetcar runs nearly six miles from the River Market on the Missouri River, through downtown and Midtown, to the University of Missouri–Kansas City campus and is free to ride. That north–south spine ties together some of the city’s most useful World Cup bases: River Market, the Power & Light District downtown, the Crossroads Arts District, Union Station and Crown Center, Union Hill, Westport, and the Country Club Plaza.

Staying anywhere within a short walk of Main Street gives fans an easy hop to the FIFA Fan Festival at the National WWI Museum and Memorial and to downtown watch parties, with direct bus links onward to Arrowhead Stadium, dubbed Kansas City Stadium on match days.

The physical and symbolic heart of that network is the FIFA Fan Festival Kansas City, spreading across the grounds of the National WWI Museum and Memorial just south of downtown. The free event will be open at least 18 days across June and July, aligning with Kansas City match days, US Men’s National Team games, and July 4.

“Kansas City is setting the bar high with our free FIFA Fan Festival that serves as the high-energy hub and the perfect place to watch a match,” the KC2026 spokesperson said. “It’ll truly be the heart of the game.”

Programming is structured to give repeat visitors a different experience across the tournament. Theme blocks range from Heartland Hello, a Kansas City welcome built around local and global flavors, to Sports Town USA, The World’s Game, Home Team over Independence Day, and KC Creates, a showcase of local artists and designers.

Across the site, fans can expect live match screenings on nearly 4,500 square feet of video boards, two stages of performances, skills challenges, 3v3 pitches, multisport games, and a 65-foot heart-shaped entrance built for photo backdrops and broadcast shots alike. Cooling zones, shade structures, and VIP platforms are designed with long match days in mind.

The city will open Connectkc26, a series of temporary transit routes

From that festival hub, the new ConnectKC26 system adds a dedicated World Cup overlay on top of existing RideKC services. KC2026 has leased more than 200 motorcoaches and plans to dedicate 215 buses to three main services, creating direct paths between the airport, the fan festival, regional hubs, and the stadium.

“As a part of Kansas City’s transportation plan, ConnectKC26, Stadium Direct connects ticket holders with a comfortable motorcoach bus service from FIFA Fan Festival or one of four park-and-ride sites to Kansas City Stadium on match days,” the spokesperson said. Those hubs, including sites in North Kansas City, along Highway 40, at Independence Center, and at Oak Park Mall, effectively double as smart places to stay for fans who want a straightforward ride to matches.

Region Direct, the spokesperson added, “connects riders from FIFA Fan Festival to 15 sites across the region, giving access to the diverse tourism and recreation experiences our region has to offer. This has been specifically designed to invite visitors to explore our entire bistate region’s variety of attractions outside of downtown Kansas City.”
A third route will link Kansas City International Airport and downtown, tying incoming visitors directly into the streetcar spine and the fan festival.

For visitors relying on transit, three clusters stand out on the Missouri side:

  • River Market and downtown / Power & Light — Good for fans who want to be in the thick of crowds and live broadcasts. The streetcar and many ConnectKC26 services converge here, and it is the easiest base for those who plan to move between the airport, fan festival, and late-night celebrations without a car.
  • Crossroads, Crown Center, and Union Hill — A short walk or one streetcar stop from the fan festival grounds, these neighborhoods suit fans who want a balance of quieter stays and quick access to the WWI Museum, Union Station, and downtown.
  • Midtown, Westport, and the Country Club Plaza / UMKC corridor — The extended streetcar now connects these districts directly to downtown and the riverfront, creating a continuous public-transit link from campus to stadium shuttles. For many visitors, this will feel like staying in a traditional neighborhood while still being plugged into the World Cup grid.

Kansas-side hubs for Stadium Direct

On the Kansas side, ConnectKC26 and a parallel Johnson County United initiative are turning several suburban centers into World Cup bases. Johnson County plans circulator routes linking Leawood, Lenexa, Merriam, Mission, Olathe, Overland Park, and Shawnee, all feeding into ConnectKC26 and the airport link.

Oak Park Mall, in Overland Park, is slated as a Stadium Direct park-and-ride, giving fans who stay in nearby hotels or short-term rentals a one-seat ride to Kansas City Stadium on match days. For travelers who want easier freeway access or larger properties while still depending on buses to reach matches, that corridor offers a pragmatic base.

Why pick Kansas City if you choose just one World Cup city

“While many cities have experience hosting large-scale events, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is a generational milestone for KC,” the spokesperson said. “Kansas City offers an authentic sports-town atmosphere, with the welcoming, hospitable spirit of the Midwest that visitors won’t find anywhere else.”

One unique aspect of Kansas City is that events and watch parties extend into two states, the only host city to do so (as its the only one located in two states). Because the city is optimizing its public transit to get people around, they can hit both states while still staying centrally located. The best way to this is to book a place to stay along the streetcar, near the fan festival, or beside a ConnectKC26 hub, then let Kansas City’s new transit grid do the hard work between the airport, downtown, and the stadium.

“Closer to the tournament, visitors can explore different attractions, places to stay, restaurants and transportation options to plan their comprehensive itinerary through the Kansas City section of the Official FIFA World Cup app,” the spokesperson said.

For fans planning a car-free trip, the strategy is straightforward: book a bed along the streetcar, near the fan festival, or beside a ConnectKC26 hub — then let Kansas City’s new transit grid do the hard work between the airport, downtown, and the stadium.
