Where to Play, Eat, and Stay on a Ski Trip to North Carolina’s High Country

North Carolina Ski and Snow Insider Guides
by Yolande Clark-Jackson Jan 15, 2025

Compared to states like Colorado and Utah, North Carolina gets overlooked as a ski destination. But if my recent ski trip to the state’s High Country taught me anything, it’s that North Carolina’s slopes are worth a visit, with Blue Ridge Mountain views and plenty of terrain that’s approachable for beginners like me.

I explored three of the region’s best ski resorts — Appalachian, Sugar Mountain, and Hatley Pointe — each with a distinct vibe and ratio of laid-back runs to more challenging routes. But a winter trip to High Country is about more than just skiing. Before or after a day on the slopes, you’ll find plenty of chances to unwind in mountain towns, cozy places to stay, and delicious meals to keep you energized.

If you’re planning a ski-season getaway or a weekend retreat to North Carolina’s High Country, here’s how to make the most of your winter trip, just like I did.

Appalachian Ski Resort

Appalachian Ski Resort is the perfect first stop on a High Country ski trip, especially for beginners. As the region’s first ski area — opened in 1962 as Blowing Rock Ski Lodge and operating under its current name since 1968 — it offers 13 slopes, four terrain parks, and an outdoor ice skating rink. Appalachian is also home to the French Swiss Ski College, the Southeast’s largest independent ski school, and trains Special Olympics athletes, which adds to the inclusive atmosphere.

One big plus for those without their own gear is that Appalachian’s rental shop is very convenient — you can just walk through the door and get outfitted with everything you need. If you’re not ready to hit the slopes on your own, the resort offers group and private lessons for all levels, as well as the SKIwee Children’s Program for young skiers.

The resort also has snowshoeing, tubing, and a 10,000-square-foot outdoor ice skating rink. With 20 slopes and state-of-the-art snowmaking, Sugar Mountain offers a fun mix of activities for all skill levels and has an energetic atmosphere that’s perfect for larger groups.

With 54 acres of skiable terrain, including advanced slopes, it’s ideal for skiers and snowboarders seeking more of a challenge. Hatley features double and quad lifts, as well as both day and night skiing.

For an elevated experience, upgrade to a Sanctuary pass, which grants access to a relaxing lounge, spa-like bathrooms, and a boot-warming area — a perfect spot to enjoy a hot chocolate before hitting the slopes again. Hatley Pointe provides a sophisticated and refreshing alternative for those seeking both adventure and relaxation for a full day on or off the slopes.
