On April 1, 2026, the airline that put ultra-cheap fares on the map in the US is now the biggest aviation company failure in decades. After two bankruptcies, a blocked 2022 merger with JetBlue, and a failed government rescue, the country’s most polarizing budget carrier is gone for good.
What happened?
On May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of its operations after last-chance talks to save the airline failed on May 1. It’s the first major carrier in the US in 25 years to go out of business because of financial problems. The shutdown was fast-moving, with the carrier completely ceasing operations after it couldn’t reach a bailout agreement with the federal government.
