We’ve grown accustomed to paying close attention to the vibrant wildflower blooms in California, but this year, one of the most striking explosions of floral color is happening in Italy’s Umbria region.
In the grasslands surrounding the Italian village of Castelluccio, fields of violets, poppies, daffodils, buttercups, purple eugenia, clovers, shamrocks, and other flowers are currently in full bloom. The bloom occurs every year between late May and early July, and it’s called “La Fioritura”.
The official site reads, “For several weeks the chromatic monotony of grassland is broken by a mosaic of colors, with variations in color ranging from yellow ocher to red.”
Although the bloom is an annual event, predicting the exact timing is a bit difficult. It largely depends on the amount of rainfall the region has received and other climatic conditions.
If you can’t make it to Umbria to see the bloom for yourself, check out photos of the colorful bloom online.
