Telur gulung is an Indonesian omelette that is rolled around a filling of vegetables, meat, seafood, or tofu. The most popular variety of telur gulung is made with minced chicken and shiitake mushrooms, with other common ingredients including carrots, bell peppers, onions, garlic, and sweet soy sauce. Once the ingredients are combined in an egg mixture that has been seasoned with salt and pepper, they are cooked until golden brown before being rolled up into delicious little packets.

Telur gulung has been around for centuries. It was first created by Chinese immigrants who settled in Semarang during their travels from China to Indonesia. The name “telur gulung” literally translates to “rolled egg” in English, and the dish was created as a creative way to use leftover ingredients and feed a large number of people at once. Over time, it became an integral part of Semarang’s culinary culture and spread throughout Indonesia.

If you’re not planning a trip to Indonesia anytime soon, you can still try this local delicacy at home. Making telur gulung isn’t difficult – it just takes some time and patience. Start by prepping all your ingredients; chop your veggies into small pieces (the smaller the better!) and then mix them together in a large bowl with the eggs, herbs, spices, and salt & pepper. Heat up some oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat before pouring in the egg mixture. Let it sit for about three minutes before flipping it over for another three minutes until both sides are golden brown. Finally, roll your telur gulung like an omelette and plate it up.
