You can reach the hotel via the Gornergrat Railway, a remarkable feat of engineering that takes travelers on a scenic journey up the Gornergrat mountain ridge and provides unparalleled views of the Swiss Alps. The railway — which was revolutionary for its time and quickly became popular amongst tourists from all over Europe — was built in 1898 by hotelier Johannes Badrutt and opened for public use in 1898. The original line ran from Zermatt to Riffelalp but was extended in 1933 to reach its current terminus at Gornergrat. Nowadays, the journey up takes roughly half an hour and takes passengers, and as you travel higher and higher up into the Alps, the views become increasingly spectacular.
Once you do reach the hotel, you’ll find a variety of accommodations to choose from, from single rooms with mountain-view balconies to family suites with multiple bedrooms.
