In this TED talk, writer and novelist Taiye Selasi discusses the problems with the question “Where are you from?”

“What are we really seeking, though, when we ask where someone comes from?” she asks, “And what are we really seeing when we hear an answer?”

Where you’re from, she argues, has less to do with where you were born or where you live, and more to do with where we have rituals, relationships, restrictions, and overall experiences.
