Los Glaciares National Park lies in Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province, where the Southern Patagonian Ice Field feeds more than a dozen glaciers, among them Perito Moreno, Spegazzini, and Viedma. Like many of the world’s most fragile landscapes, this region is changing. Over the past decade, scientists monitoring the park have observed that warmer summers are accelerating glacial melt, and the glaciers’ once-steady fronts are beginning to retreat.

Perito Moreno, long considered unusually stable, has thinned by up to 18 feet a year in some areas and retreated nearly half a mile since 2018. As the natural ridges that once held the ice in place disappear, nearby valleys are being reshaped, revealing landscapes hidden for generations.

Hiking Los Glaciares is a dream activity, but environmental shifts are reshaping how visitors experience the park. Rangers have extended trails to new lookouts, closed off unstable zones, and added infrastructure to improve safety and access. A new boardwalk now leads to Mirador De Agostini, offering sweeping views of Spegazzini Glacier. On Lake Viedma, boat tours now run alongside upgraded land routes that make exploration easier and more secure.

The season is shifting. Once confined to the summer months of December through February, hiking access now extends into October and April, offering a longer, quieter window to explore

The region’s hospitality scene is evolving, too. Two new eco-stays that opened in 2025 — OVO Patagonia’s cliff-side pods near El Chaltén and Pristine El Calafate’s solar-powered domes overlooking Lake Argentino — offer a closer, lower-impact way to experience the ice while helping relieve pressure on the busy hubs of El Calafate and El Chaltén.

OVO Patagonia is one of the boldest new lodging concepts of the year. Its four transparent, three-level capsules are mounted to a sheer cliff face nearly 885 feet above the valley floor — accessible only via ferrata. Each capsule includes a sleeping area on top, a compact lounge and bathroom in the middle, and a suspended net terrace below. The panoramic views rival those typically reserved for climbers, offering a dramatic, and sustainable, way to connect with one of the planet’s most extraordinary environments.
