Famously easy on the eye and infamously tough on the lungs, Cinque Terre is a string of five Italian Riviera villages. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – the “Five Lands” – all sit under the Cinque Terre National Park.

The Cinque Terre Express will get you in and your feet will get you around these car-free coastal havens. All fraziones are linked by cliffside walking trails of varying difficulty. Most are free but those from Monterosso to Vernazza and from Vernazza to Corniglia require a Cinque Terre Trekking Card. After a landslide caused the closure of the Path of Love in 2012, this prized oceanfront hiking trail uniting Manarola and Riomaggiore is slated to reopen in 2024 in accordance with new sustainability measures.

In terms of where to stay in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore – the largest, liveliest, and most southerly village – has a motley of activities for all tastes. Monterosso lures families to the north with its sandy beaches and promise of fewer ups and downs. The postcard-pretty streets and medieval ruins of Vernazza and the grapevine-drenched Manarola cast their spell on couples and honeymooners. Perched on a rocky promontory 377 steps above the main village, Corniglia is the quietest and least-visited.

Apartment rentals and vacation cottages are available in all five fraziones. Offering tantalizing views of the Ligurian Riviera and bucket loads of charm, add these Airbnbs in Cinque Terre to your wishlist today
