Return to the full list of the best dog-friendly places to go in 2026

If you were to ask your dog what their dream destination might be, chances are that words like “forest” and “park” would feature heavily. This question alone makes dog-friendly Portland, Oregon, a great place to take your pups — especially to visit the aptly named Forest Park. More of a reserve than a park, this giant slice of northwest Portland offers more than 80 miles of hiking trails accessible from multiple trailheads. Be sure to hit the Lower Macleay Park trailhead to the historic Stone House, a five-mile roundtrip with more sniffs along the way than a month’s worth of after-work neighborhood strolls.

Most breweries and cafes throughout the city have dog-friendly patios, and it’s likely that Portland’s penchant for canines contributed heavily to the rise of the acclaimed food truck pods that are famous spread across the city. After visiting any of the aforementioned, stroll the Willamette River waterfront path, and at some point during your trip visit Fetch Coffeeroasters, where your dog will be happier about your cup of coffee than you are.

Even in the heart of downtown, you’ll find off-leash areas like Sellwood Riverfront Park and Mt. Tabor Park where dogs can play freely and meet new friends. The city has plenty of green space and parks and a very pro-dog atmosphere throughout. Nearly 40 percent of households in Oregon have a dog, so yours will be in good company, no matter where in the city you stay.
