The List of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants Was Just Released - and People Are Pissed

You can’t consider yourself a true foodie until you’ve tried the best restaurants in the world, right? Luckily, the official list of the world’s 50 best restaurants has just been released. From the US to Thailand, the list includes restaurants across the world, which will appeal to connoisseurs with a variety of palates.

At the top of the list is Osteria Francescana located in Modena, Italy, an avant-garde Italian restaurant that many will recognize as being featured in the last season of Master of None on Netflix. Being #1 isn’t new to Osteria Francescana, which took the top spot two years ago, before being dethroned by New York’s Eleven Madison Park. Now at #2 is El Celler de Can Roca in Catalonia, with Mirazur in Southern France at #3, and Eleven Madison Park dropping to #4 after closing for renovations in 2017.

The list, however, has taken some criticism from those who believe it isn’t diverse enough, it lacks female chefs, and it focuses too much on European establishments. This criticism intensified with yet another white, European male chef taking the top prize. For example, in 2016, the list named Chef Dominique Crenn the world’s top female chef, yet her restaurant didn’t even appear on the top 100 that year. Crenn has called the female chef award itself “stupid” and accused the organization of treating women like “sport.”

While the number of female chefs on the list has increased to five from last year’s three, the number still remains staggeringly small. One of the Top 50 announcers even declared, during the unveiling of the list that “it’s all about girl power tonight”, yet only two of the restaurants on the list are run by women. It just goes to show that food experts might have trained palates, but they can still be tone deaf.
