The editors at Matador Network review a lot of luggage, from backpacks to hardshell cases and duffel bags. To test them out appropriately, we take them on multiple trips and put them through the wringer. We roll them through city streets and country lanes; stuff them in overhead bins; carry them on hikes, bike rides, and boat journeys; put them though the cruel process of being checked at airports; and often chuck them in the back of cars without much care. What we never do to test luggage, however, is to drop them from space. But that’s what Samsonite does.

To prove to the world that their Proxis suitcase is made of super tough stuff, the people at Samsonite decided to take one Proxis case, fly it to the stratosphere, and then drop it all the way back onto Earth. And because the brand was extremely confident about the result, they filmed the entire thing and posted it on YouTube.

According to Samsonite, the ultimate drop test involved subjecting the Proxis to temperatures as low as -85°F before dropping it from an altitude of 130,000 feet (well beyond the cruising altitude of an airliner) at 260 miles per hour.

After a very hard landing on dirt and rocks, however, the Proxis turned out to be just fine. Not only was it in one piece, but it was also seemingly unaffected: no scratches, no scuffs. Luggage handlers could take out all their pent-up rage on your Proxis and you would not even know it.

Samsonite’s Proxis is a lightweight four-wheel suitcase made of Roxkin™, a material that the brand says “bounces back into shape easily and is highly resilient in resisting shocks.” The Proxis exists in both a carry-on and a large version.
