The Northern Territory of Australia, home of the Outback, has a variety of luxury tourist infrastructure and adventure options.

WHEN I FIRST HEARD that I would be traveling to the Outback, my mind ran through just about every cliche imaginable. I had visions of sitting in a sweltering bar, flies buzzing around my head, drinking a cold stubby, only to have the bar door thrown open as Mick Dundee burst through wrestling a crocodile.

Corny? Of course. Tourist ignorance? Clearly. A travel fantasy of mine? Most definitely.

The Outback that I experienced over the next two weeks was quite the contrary of my preconceptions. I learned a lot about so many different things: the land, the people, the grub, the wildlife, and the rich history that makes the Outback so special.

I hit the ground running the second I landed in Alice Springs. Here are some of the highlights from my itinerary.

Of all places, I had my first kangaroo steak in France. It was delish.

Yeah, I need to get to Australia.

  • Michelle Schusterman

Never had kangaroos steak – but I did try kangaroo paté once. It was spicy.

Gorgeous photos. I had to stop on the second one just to soak in all the red.

    Dang, amazing photos.

There are 6 major regions and attractions in the Northern Territory’s
Top End including Darwin, Kakadu National Park, Territory Wildlife Park,
Arnhem Land, Litchfield National Park and Katherine. Darwin, the
Territory’s capital, is renowned for its markets and festivals and
impressive natural harbour. It’s also the gateway to the wealth of
natural treasures the Top End has to offer. Australia’s largest National
Park is on the Arnhem Highway, just 250 km from Darwin. World famous
for its cultural and natural wonders, Kakadu is home to one of the most
concentrated bands of Aboriginal rock art on earth. Head 3 hours south
and you’ll find the vast river systems, escarpments and gorges that wind
through the national parks, reserves and cattle stations of Katherine.
The Katherine River cuts through immense sandstone cliffs of Nitmiluk
National Park forming the iconic Katherine Gorge. Just 1.5 hours from
Darwin, the Litchfield National Park is another of the Top Ends most
spectacular attractions featuring cascading waterfalls, waking tracks
and swimming holes where you can immerse yourself in the pioneering
      history.

Oh…I need to go back!!  Lived in Australia for nearly a decade, yet never made it to the Northern Territory!  Your photos are awesome!  Wish I could be there right now!  Interesting take on the kangaroo.  Personally – I love it.  Was afraid to cook it at first and reserved it for restaurants.  It is only since going back on vacations that I have actually cooked it on my own – so tasty.  They say it is the best animal source of iron – and so lean!

The horses today are DESCENDANTS, not ANCESTORS of the original horses. Nice photos!

I particularly like the photo of the branding irons.  Overall it looks like you had a great time.  I have not yet visited the Alice Springs and Uluru area, but it is definitely on my list of future trips I would like to do.

We recently travelled to outback New South Wales, in particular the areas around Broken Hill, White Cliffs and Mildura.
