THIS TECHNIQUE MAKES WHAT IS KNOWN as a Swedish Torch, and of course I had to try to dig up the story behind it. There doesn’t seem to be anything definitive but a popular theory is that it was invented during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) by Swedish soldiers. Firewood was hard to come by and this provided a more efficient use for what they had. Whether any of this is true or not really doesn’t matter. I just need to try this this summer.
