Scotland has hundreds of islands, many offering the tranquility, scenery, and immersion in nature that travelers crave. The issue is that they tend to be hard to reach, often requiring long, weather-dependent ferry crossings. The Isle of Arran is different. Yes, it’s a little remote, but the journey is on the short side – about 2.5 hours from Glasgow, including a 55-minute boat ride. As such, it’s a popular tourist destination, but you won’t be dealing with crowds here, especially outside the summer months.

Since the Isle of Arran became a UNESCO Global Geopark in April of 2025, hiking belongs at the top of your list. It’s one of the best ways to take in roughly 600 million years of geological history. Climbing Goat Fell, the highest point on the island at 2,866 feet, is the ideal way to immerse yourself in the island’s striking wilderness. For the most ambitious, walking the all-around-the-island, 63-mile Arran Coastal Way is the best course of action. And make sure you make the three-mile round-trip walk to the Machris Moor Stone Circle – you’ll feel the magic of this mysterious place and enjoy some spectacular scenery while you’re at it.
