Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark, though it typically gets much less attention from travelers than Copenhagen does. In an era when it’s more important than ever to travel off of the beaten path, there’s never been a better time to make Aarhus your main Denmark travel destination in 2025.

Not only was Aarhus one of the happiest cities in the world in 2024, but it also ranked as the fifth most sustainable tourist destination. The striking architecture, a mix of historic and ultra-modern, is one of the many appeals of the city: the Aarhus Cathedral, the Iceberg apartment buildings, the lighthouse, the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, and the Old Town Open Air Museum are all worth a detour. When you’re done wandering the city streets, you can either take a swim in the pools of the public Harbour Bath, book a Green Kayak and paddle around the Bay of Arrhus for free (with the condition that you collect trash during your outing), or you can take a quick walk in the surrounding woodlands and experience another architectural masterpiece: the very meditative Infinite Bridge.
