Whether you call it the Mother Road, the Main Street of America, or simply Route 66, the lore of the open road in the United States is largely defined by one historic highway. Route 66 turns 100 in 2026, but the celebrations start in 2025 with the Texas Route 66 Festival in June. Ten days of car shows, live music, bus tours, a cattle drive, a parade, and festivities along Texas’s iconic stretch on Route 66 make for a destination-worthy lineup. And it all culminates with the finale in Amarillo’s Route 66 Historic District on June 14.

There is plenty of entertainment to be found in and around Amarillo throughout the year if you can’t make it in June. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” for hiking, biking, or horseback riding with a backdrop of jaw-dropping geological formations. Or keep with the car theme and base your trip around a scenic Texas road trip (don’t miss Cadillac Ranch, a quirky roadside art installation featuring graffiti-covered Cadillacs).

Texas barbecue will be a highlight regardless of the focus of any 2025 trip. Amarillo has travelers covered from classic to challenging — test your stomach with the 72-ounce steak challenge at The Big Texan Steak Ranch.
