Osaka is known as the “kitchen of Japan” — no small moniker for a country famous for incredible food. The city has historically played the role of a major trading center for rice and other goods, and all of those merchants coming in and out helped build a thriving food culture. High-end seafood restaurants share must-eat status alongside street food stalls serving up classics like takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (a type of savory pancake), and all manner of traditional Japanese desserts. There’s even a word for overindulgence in Osaka: kuidaore, or “eating until you drop.” The lively Dotonbori District is the place to go for the best street food and nightlife in the city.

The great food in Osaka never goes away. So why 2025? Osaka will host Expo 2025 from April to October, drawing representatives from 150 countries around the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” Participating countries will build architecturally stunning pavilions to promote their ideas and projects, and visitors can meander through the space to get a sense for what living in the future might look like. Now that’s a good way to build an appetite back up. If you’d rather look back, visit Osaka Castle or see Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines.

The city is also a getaway to the undervisited natural wonderland of Kii Peninsula, where you can walk gorgeous pilgrimage routes to UNESCO-listed sacred sites, take the Kumano Kodo trail connecting sacred shrines, and learn about the women divers (ama) in ama huts where you can enjoy locally and sustainably caught seafood.
