Denver Becomes the First City in the US to Decriminalize Magic Mushrooms

After a dramatic vote on Wednesday, Denver has become the first city in the country to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms. Initiative 301 passed by a narrow margin with 50.6 percent of the vote — 89,320 in favor, 87,341 against.

Research showing potential health benefits of psychedelic mushrooms likely played a role in the outcome of the campaign. Indeed, the US Food and Drug Administration has acknowledged psilocybin as a form of “breakthrough therapy” for its ability to treat depression.

The new law will essentially tell police to treat psilocybin mushrooms as their lowest priority or to “turn the other way.” Buying, selling, and possessing the mushrooms would still be illegal, but Initiative 301 would reduce penalties for users who are caught.

Oregon is also taking steps to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms in 2020.
