It can sometimes feel like dogs outnumber humans on the trails and in the town of Bellingham, and nobody seems to have a problem with that. In fact, it’s encouraged. Sitting between the Salish Sea and the foothills of the North Cascades, Bellingham is an incredible outdoor adventure destination that pairs long days outside with laid-back Pacific Northwest culture in town.

This is particularly the case for dogs who love being by the water. At Zuanich Point Park, dogs run with the wind coming off Bellingham Bay at their tail, and the paved paths make it an easily accessible spot for relaxed morning walks. Just down the shoreline, Boulevard Park connects directly to Taylor Dock, a scenic over-the-water boardwalk leading into historic Fairhaven. (Just don’t let them get too inspired from watching the locals boldly jump in the water.)

For off-leash adventures, Lake Padden has an off-leash trail looping through trees around the lake. Nearby Lake Whatcom Park and Stimpson Family Nature Reserve offer miles of leashed forest hiking with towering evergreens, moss-draped logs, and quiet creek crossings. On hot summer days, Little Squalicum Beach is one of the rare off-leash saltwater beaches in Washington.

Bellingham’s brewery scene is another major draw for dog owners. Many of the town’s best breweries, including Aslan Brewing Company, Stemma Brewing, and El Sueñito Brewing Co., welcome dogs on their patios. Breweries often have food as well, but if you’re looking for a true restaurant, Skylark’s Cafe and The Loft are great stops. Your best bet, however, may be to just find a place with an outdoor patio. If you dress appropriately, Bellingham’s weather is usually mild enough to sit outside in winter, especially as
restaurants usually have outdoor heaters to keep the chill off).

The best dog-friendly hotels in Bellingham

Many Bellingham hotels welcome dogs, though they may have limitations about leaving dogs in rooms or the maximum size your pup can be. Stay closer to downtown if you’re keen to walk to dog-friendly breweries, or closer to Lake Whatcom, if you and your pup care more about trail running and hiking.
