Glowing Blue Dolphins Filmed Swimming in the Waters of California

Glowing dolphins sound like a creature out of a Disney movie, but if so, California is the new Atlantica.

In a video shared on social media by Newport Coastal Adventure, a whale watching company, dolphins glow a magical shade of blue thanks to a beautiful display of bioluminescence off Newport Beach.

The natural phenomenon is created by the dolphins swimming through a large dinoflagellate population. Dinoflagellates are neither plants or animals, but small planktonic surface organisms that create the luminescence at night when agitated.

The extraordinary spectacle was captured by photographer and videographer Patrick Coyne, who was lucky enough to witness another rare and dazzling show of bioluminescence last week in the same area.

On Instagram, Patrick Coyne described the experience as “one of the most magical nights of my life,” and we believe him.
