This Guy Got Blackout Drunk -- and Booked an Amazing Trip

by Matt Hershberger Nov 2, 2015

WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE. We’ve had a few too many to drink, the night’s gotten a bit hazy, and then we’ve woken up to realize that we did something horrible during the blackout. For most of us, it’s drunk calling an ex or puking in public. For Jamie Ather, it was booking an $800 plane ticket to Rio.

Ather, a 24-year-old Scottish banker, had gone out clubbing, and when he woke up, the ticket was booked, and the cancellation window had passed.

He considered canceling and just losing the money, but eventually decided to go. He went to the Copacabana, Iguazu Falls, Machu Picchu, and he chilled with sloths in Bahia.

“It has really made me realise that you just need to take risks sometimes and get over your fear if you want to get the most from life,” Ather said.

“I had never been away on my own on a trip like that, so I was really nervous about setting off, but I ended up having one of the best experiences of my life.”
