25 places to go in 2026

The state of Chihuahua doesn’t make the typical traveler list for top places to go in Mexico , but it should for anyone who loves big landscapes, easy travel, and destinations that are about to become the next big thing. The northern state, Mexico’s biggest by area, is actively transitioning into one of the outdoorsiest places in Mexico, luring visitors with its walkable historic center, affordable restaurants and hotels, and towering Sierra Madres that offer all manner of ways to play outside.

For most travelers, getting there requires flying into the city of Chihuahua’s General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport, which has direct connections from Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, among others. The outdoor appeal starts even in the city, as you can enjoy carne asada burritos and margaritas – both of which were allegedly created in the state – at outdoor cafes overlooking the surrounding hills. Because Chihuahua City’s historic core is fairly compact, it’s easy to skip the rideshares and walk between museums, markets, and parks.

When you’re ready to explore the rest of the state, head to destinations like Creel, 186 miles from Chihuahua City, or Batopilas, another 84 miles past that. Creel is the getaway to Copper Canyon, a network of canyons deeper in places than the Grand Canyon (the Cerro del Gallego viewpoint is unmissable). Lodging ranges from guesthouses to rustic mountain hotels, and the town’s main street is dotted with colorful outfitters and local restaurants. Spend your days biking, hiking with knowledgeable Rarámuri guides, seeing UNESCO-designated cliff houses, or riding the Chepe Express between surrounding Pueblo Magicos.

Next, head to Batopilas, a canyon town where outdoor adventure and Mexican culture overlap. There, old haciendas have become boutique hotels, and days can be spent hiking, lounging by the river, and relaxing in the small plaza at sunset.
