Return to the full list of the best dog-friendly places to go in 2026

One of Colorado’s most famous ski resort towns also happens to be one of the best ones to bring the dog along. Dogs are welcome throughout downtown’s cafes, gear shops, restaurants, breweries, and bars with open-air seating. Where else can you stop at a place like Kenosha for lunch to order off both the human and dog menus, and then take a short walk to a brewery like Broken Compass, where the slogan is “drink beer, pet dogs,” and pups big and small wander inside and out? Businesses across town put out water bowls in the summer (it gets hot, but not too hot for fragile paws), and most patios are pet-friendly. In the winter, heaters and wind barriers keep things pleasant.

All of that makes staying in Breckenridge with your dog easy and enjoyable. But this is a Colorado mountain town, and here, it’s all about getting outdoors. Breck goes above and beyond in this regard. Not just for the trails and outdoor activities (more in that for a bit), but for how to get there: in the warmer months, the BreckConnect Gondola is a free, 10-minute ride from Breckenridge Station to Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 8. Dogs of all sizes are welcome to join on the ride and look over the Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve before reaching the dog-friendly trails and restaurants at the top like Robbie’s Tavern. And if your dog isn’t a ride-through-the-sky type of pet, the buses are pet-friendly, too.

And speaking of trails: there are plenty to choose from around town, and you don’t always need a car to get there. The easy Blue River Rec Path is perfect for low-key walks and runs, while popular routes like the Iowa Hill Trail, Sawmill Reservoir Trail, and French Gulch deliver classic Colorado scenery. For a quick off-leash romp, Carter Park Dog Park offers a fenced space with sweeping views of the ski area. Leashes are required in town limits, but around Summit County, voice-controlled dogs can be off leash and up to 10 feet from their owners.

Winter travelers don’t need to leave their dogs behind, either. While pups aren’t allowed on the ski lifts, many nearby Nordic centers permit leashed dogs on designated snowshoe and cross-country trails. The town’s sidewalks stay well-plowed, and outfitters in Summit County sell booties and jackets to keep paws warm on snowy walks.

In Breckenridge, you’ll find that many hotels welcome pups. While those in the village center may have limits on size or breed, hotels and resorts just out of town usually understand that the mountains of Colorado are the perfect place for canines to vacation.
