For a cinematic Iceland experience, start in Reykjavík and explore the peninsula south of the capital city. At the Blue Lagoon, you’ll recognize scenes from The Fifth Estate and Halo: Nightfall. Scenes from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Noah, and Flags of Our Fathers have also been filmed in the Southern Peninsula region. Then, head east along the southern coast, through Vík, toward the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where you’ll get a taste of some James Bond, Tomb Raider, and Batman action. As you continue north, make sure to stop off at Lake Mývatn. This site is a hotbed of geothermal activity and other unique geography, including perfectly round craters. There’s a reason Game of Thrones, Prometheus, Oblivion, and Noah all chose to film in the remote area.
For the most complete trip, visit the Golden Circle just northeast of Reykjavík, where The Journey to the Center of the Earth was filmed, along with more scenes from Game of Thrones and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
