If you’re passing out candy for Halloween this year and want to know what trick-or-treaters in your state are really craving, you need to have a look at this map before you hit the grocery store. Created by CandyStore.com, using 11 years of their own sales data, this map shows the most popular candy in each state. And no, it’s not just Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers across the board. In some states, the results may surprise you. From salt water taffy in Washington to Hot Tamales in North Dakota, some fairly unconventional treats are throwing their hats in the trick-or-treat arena.
You can hover over each state to view its top three most popular candies to shop accordingly. As for overall leaders, however, Skittles takes the top spot (being California’s candy of choice probably didn’t hurt). M&M’s, Snickers, and Reese’s Cups follow closely behind, with candy corn, Halloween’s signature candy, coming in at number six. There’s really no accounting for taste, but it may not come as a surprise that Hawaii favors tropical-colored Skittles, or that Louisiana, known for its citrus fruits, prefers Lemonheads.
In 2018, it’s expected that $2.6 billion will be spent on candy for trick-or-treating. Of the 179 million Americans who celebrate Halloween, 95 percent are expected to purchase candy, spending an average of $27 per household. That’s a lot of money on candy, so you’d better take a nice long look at the map and make sure you’re doing it right.
