Wine and Dine With Friendly Giraffes — in the Heart of Texas

Turns out, if you’re craving a safari experience, you don’t have to fly halfway across the world. You can mingle with zebras, kangaroos, giraffes, and more just 30 minutes outside of Waco, Texas — and we’re not talking about a trip to the zoo.

Blue Hills Ranch is a 150-acres giraffe and animal sanctuary in McGregor, Texas. (That’s slightly south of Waco and an hour-and-a-half northeast of Austin.) The ranch offers a variety of animal experiences, as well as cabins and an RV resort if you’d like to stay the night.

One of the coolest experiences that Blue Hills Ranch offers is called Dining with Giraffes, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. For $400 per person — $350 if you book one of the cabins — you can enjoy an hour-long meal of wine, salad, and charcuterie while rubbing elbows with giraffes that you can pet (and who might even nibble at your carrot sticks). The experience is designed for a minimum of two people and a maximum of six.

We hope you love Blue Hills Ranch! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

Other animal experiences at Blue Hills Ranch include a safari-style drive across the grounds and an otter adventure that allows you to play with the animals while they soak in a hot tub. In addition to safari animals — think zebras, red kangaroos, emus, camels, African spurred tortoise, and scimitar oryx — you’ll also see the sort of animals you might expect to inhabit a Texan ranch, such as wild mustangs, bison, mini donkeys, cows, pigs, deer, and horses.

Rates for the five cabins range from $100 to $500 per night for a standard two-person occupancy, although there’s enough room for four to six guests depending on the cabin. The cabins themselves are more comfortable than that accommodation type might suggest, complete with king-size memory foam mattresses, a fully equipped kitchenette, walk-in showers with standard bathroom amenities, and private balconies. Rates for RV sites range between $30 and $50 per night for two people, plus $10 additional per person per night.
